Turbine actuators

We supply and overhaul a range of Woodward actuators for steam and gas turbines.

Actuators and amplifiers

Generally used for turbine applications, actuators provide the muscle for analogue and digital controls. They convert electrical input signal into a proportional hydraulic output shaft position.

SG (Simple Governor)

The SG is a hydraulic speed droop governor for control of small engines or turbines. They are also available for use as overspeed trip devices in various forms. As a notably small governor, the SG is available in work ranges from 10.8 to 21.7 inch-pounds. It is compatible for use with the majority of prime movers and can be used in either isochronous or droop format.

Speed adjustment options:

• Speed Setting Shaft – stop screws can be used to limit speed range
• Speed Adjusting Motor – enables an operator to adjust the speed from a remote location: Denki, Groschopp or Pittman motor.
• Pneumatic Speed Adjustment
• Only an external shutdown device can be used on this model.

The most common forms of output include splined, plain or notched, but linear with spring return is also available.

Mechanical Governors

Our experienced team can work with governors manufactured as early as the 1960s.

Governors

So how exactly does a governor work? The ‘black box’ still holds many mysteries for some. Here it is in a nutshell based on the well-known UG8 model.

UG-25+

The UG-25+ is a notably more enhanced and developed version of the UG actuator. It is a microprocessor controlled, mechanical-hydraulic, amplified governor which is used for controlling diesel, gas and dual fuel engines and steam turbines.

It is available in two sizes 25 and 31 ft-lb, and is directly replaceable with UG-8 and 3161 governors.

The UG-25+ is considerably fast-acting and offers high work output, hence it does not require additional auxiliary devices such as start booster or oil cooler.

Other features:
• Convenient front panel adjustments
• Speed setting with 4 to 20 mA signal
• Easy setup and tuning
• Discrete output driver for status indication
• Isochronous or droop control
• Drive shaft options

TGE13 / TGE17

The TG-13E and 17E actuators are self-contained electro-hydraulic actuators for use on steam turbines where isochronous control, load sharing, or other functions are required. They can be used with all available Woodward electronic governor controls and accessories with mechanical or hydraulic drive.

The two sizes available are 12.2 and 17.5 ft-lb work capacity.

Other features:

• Proportional electric mechanical transducer
• Rotary output
• Self-contained oil sump
• UL listed model available
• Adjustable feedback

EG3-P

The EGP range of actuators, for use on diesel, gas and petrol engines in addition to turbines are designed for use in control systems requiring a proportional mechanical output or a proportional electrical input. They convert 20 to 160mA signals into proportional rotary output positions.

They are available in 4.5, 6 and 10 ft-lb work output capacity.

Other features:

• Rotary output
• Oil motor or oil pump option
• Proportional electric mechanical transducer
