Service Department in high demand

This February it has been nice to see lots of work coming in from brand new customers in the UK. From a rail preservation society to a waterborne transport logistics company!  Our Service department are also in very high demand this month.

Overhauls

Our biggest job this month worked on by our governor technicians was to fully overhaul four very large steam valves,  the valves each weighing around one tonne  were fully stripped, cleaned, inspected, rebuilt  and tested, they will be fitted back on to their steam turbines at the waste management site.

A governor that we don’t see very often is a Regulateurs Europa 303, this came into us for overhaul from a Rail preservation society, the  Ardleigh Governor was around 54 years old, but once fully overhauled looked as good as new and was delivered back to be fitted onto its steam locomotive in Derbyshire.

Another governor that rarely comes into our works is the Haganute governor, two of these governors were completely overhauled and delivered back to a luxury cruise liner.

Service

Some of our onsite jobs this month include the following;

Our engineer Jon spent  10 days on board a lavish cruise liner sailing the carribbean, the job entailed sorting out the technical issues concerning the start sequence on a 2301d control that needed to be resolved.

Emergency call out for our service engineer to attend a UK offshore safety vessel, the main engine had failed in service so our engineer had to diagnose control problems. Vital spares were supplied from our stock to enable the repair of the main engine governor drive. Once repairs were complete, the vessel continued back out to sea.

Engineer Steve attended a naval vessel to commence basin trials on the engine followed by sea trials to ensure all was running properly.

We are currently in the process of organising our charity bike ride event, and this year looking at participating in The Tour de Tendering. On this particular event we can choose our own charity to donate to.

A jam-packed January for the service department

EGS are looking forward to 2013 being another busy and eventful year.  We welcome our new customers and will continue serving existing customers with our repeatedly high standard.

Spares

The spares department have been busy in particular fulfilling a large order to one of our customers in Dubai.  This month 75% of the spares orders have been shipped to overseas destinations.

Overhauls & New builds

Governor Technician Chris has been building 2off Woodward EGB58P new build Governors for a couple of our good marine based clients. These governors are typically fitted to Wartsila Vasa 32 engines.

A rare governor that we don’t see many of these days is the KKK ‘P’ type Governor, this came in for overhaul. This governor is usually  fitted to a Siemens Turbine, with its function being to remotely control the speed of the turbine.

Service

Some of our onsite service work this month include;

Our first job of the year was for a new customer from Ireland who contacted us regarding a problem they had on board their vessel. Our Engineer Jon went to investigate the intermittent fault on one of the boats generators. After connecting and monitoring the input and outputs on a new Woodward 2301D control the problem was eventually found on this diesel electric boat as a run signal problem.

Yet another new customer approached EGS concerning a steam turbine engine problem. Upon inspection it was found that the turbine wouldn’t shut down properly, the problem was with the hydraulic actuator currently fitted. This was then removed examined, cleaned, greased and refitted. Problem rectified at this Paper Mill.

Our engineer also flew out to Casablanca to board a cruise liner that is currently having an engine control upgrade. The job was to install, set up and commission a new Woodward 2301D Control.

Other

We have just recently renewed our IMPA membership (International Marine Purchasing Association). If you are not familiar with IMPA have a look at their website http://impa.net/

All our Governor packing boxes have been upgraded to a new, more robust wooden case, this new resilient style should prove to be extra sturdy preventing any mistreatment that should occur by those freight forwarding handlers!

We welcome back Jacqueline to the office as she returns part time from a years maternity leave.

This year at EGS our aim is to plan and partake in a couple of worthwhile charity events, and organise more social team gatherings!

Highlights from November 2012

After a bumper October, November has been a steady month for EGS.

Overhauls

Amongst our usual array of governor overhauls we have carried out a full overhaul on two Woodward PGA Load sharing governors, which are now obsolete. Even though they are no longer sold we are still able to keep them running, which means the RFA Orangeleaf governors can keep working for another few years, until they have a retrofit.

Service

Our engineer has visited the Putford Trader at Gt.Yarmouth to solve a problem with the Woodward PGA onboard, he corrected the in balance speeds between the two main engines.

UK Crude oil refinery – Our engineer set to work a turbine governor 2301 control run up after maintenance work carried out on turbine with minor adjustments being made.

We were asked to supply governing equipment on an urgent basis to newly refurbished cruise liner Saga Sapphire.  The vessel was having major engine problems as the main digital controls had failed

Retrofit

Over the last month our electrical engineers have been working on building a Peak 150 Electronic governing system for a steam turbine out in the middle east. This system will upgrade and replace the existing mechanical governor fitted.  The Peak 150 stands will be interfaced into existing control system, they are robust and future proof. The new arrangement can be operated remotely by a laptop and fitted with an easy automatic start facility.

The Peak 150 stands are currently going through their final configurations and tests to ensure the setup is correct before they are shipped next week.

Other

Once a month we at EGS like to do something fun, and this month we had ‘Fish & chip Friday’. All staff were treated to their choice from the local chip shop. It was very much enjoyed by all!

Our Workshop Manager has now moved up into the main office from down in the workshop, this is now making communication much easier and he is enjoing being in our newly refurbished office with a great view down onto his department.
